Class workshop on the prevention of fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD)
Every year, approximately 12,000 babies are born in Germany with fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD). This can mean lifelong impairment for the child. FASD is 100% preventable by completely abstaining from alcohol during pregnancy.
As part of the alcohol prevention program “HaLT-Hart am LimiT,” a 90-minute school workshop for upper grades on the topic of alcohol during pregnancy was developed.
Development
The workshop is based on the “STOP-FAS” workshop concept evaluated by MONITOR and developed by the Lower Saxony State Office for Addiction Issues (NLS). In 2019, the HaLT Service Center adapted the concept for HaLT specialists and it has been implemented nationwide ever since. Since 2022, the school class workshop has also been offered to schools in the district of Lörrach by Villa-Schöpflin gGmbh.

Objectives and target groups
The workshop "Kein Alkohol in der Schwangerschaft“ is a school workshop aimed at preventing fetal alcohol spectrum disorders and is aimed at students aged 15 and older from all types of schools.
In the workshop "Kein Alkohol in der Schwangerschaft“:
- Situations in which alcohol consumption should be avoided during pregnancy are reflected upon and discussed.
- Participants are made (more) aware of the effects of alcohol consumption during pregnancy and are encouraged to recognize the importance of responsible alcohol consumption.
- Alternative skills/strategies for dealing with alcohol consumption during pregnancy are developed and social skills are trained in order to avoid alcohol consumption in difficult everyday situations and to support pregnant women in abstaining from alcohol.
- Participants are informed about relevant aspects of alcohol consumption during pregnancy and its serious consequences, FAS(D).
- The social norm of “no alcohol during pregnancy” is promoted.
- Participants receive information on further resources and counseling services.
Struktur
Implementation
The regional implementation in the district of Lörrach is carried out by trained HaLT specialists from Villa Schöpflin. Thanks to funding from the GKV Alliance for Health, the workshop can be offered free of charge.
The interactive workshop is scheduled to last 90 minutes. The preparation time is approximately five to ten minutes.
Training courses
There is no train-the-trainer concept for this training program. This means that only HaLT specialists who have already been trained at a certified HaLT location can implement the workshop.
