„Max & Min@"

Programme for the prevention of problematic media use for grades 4, 5 and 6

Twins Max and Mina want a smartphone. However, their parents want them to first learn about the advantages and disadvantages of digital media.

This story accompanies pupils in the fourth, fifth and sixth grades through the school class workshop of the ‘Max & Min@’ programme. At the end of the workshop, the class prepares an event for their parents and guardians. If necessary, teachers and school social workers receive further training.

The programme can be implemented in all types of schools, including special education institutions. It features multilingual materials for parents and guardians.

Structure

Objectives & target groups

  • Acquisition and expansion of media literacy
  • Prevention of excessive media use and (cyber)bullying among pupils
  • Building a bridge between media education at school and media education at home
  • Promotion of media literacy among teachers and school social work professionals

Implementation

A ‘Max & Min@’ method box is required to implement the programme. The method box can only be ordered after participating in a ‘Max & Min@’ training course. Thanks to funding from the KKH Kaufmännische Krankenkasse health insurance fund, the cost price of a ‘Max & Min@’ method box is €135.

By participating in a ‘Max & Min@’ training course, you will also gain access to the internal area of the ‘Max & Min@’ programme on this website. There you will find further information and print materials that you will need to implement the programme (e.g. worksheets).

Villa Schöpflin organises a digital network meeting once a year so that you can exchange ideas about the implementation of the programme with other trained ‘Max & Min@’ specialists.

Are you a prevention specialist interested in establishing the programme in your region?
As a Max & Min@ trainer, you will have the opportunity to run the programme and train teachers and school social workers to implement the programme independently.
The ‘Max & Min@’ trainer courses are run by Franziska Zehner and Lena Butter (prevention specialists at Villa Schöpflin gGmbH) and sponsored by the KKH Kaufmännische Krankenkasse health insurance fund.
You can register for the respective training courses in the Events section of this website.

Development & Evaluation

Max & Min@ was developed by Villa Schöpflin gGmbH in collaboration with teachers, school social workers and media education specialists, and is funded by KKH Kaufmännische Krankenkasse. The effectiveness of the interactive programme was assessed in 2018 using qualitative methods by Univation – Institut für Evaluation.
The programme was originally designed for grades 5 and 6. Given that device ownership and media usage behaviour have changed significantly since 2018, the programme's target group was expanded to include grade 4 in 2024.

Due to its high practical relevance and good evaluation results, the KKH is supporting the development and management of the nationwide ‘Max & Min@’ network. To this end, Villa Schöpflin gGmbH has developed a train-the-trainer concept. Prevention specialists are trained as trainers who then train prevention specialists, teachers and school social workers in their region to become ‘Max & Min@’ facilitators. These facilitators then run ‘Max & Min@’ independently and remain in close contact with the trainers and specialist agencies that trained them.
